Scholarships Available for Graduating Girl Scouts

The application is due in April.

When Caroline Kelemen of Westlake was a Girl Scout, she helped make sure people were recycling at the Lake Erie Nature & Science Center. Olivia Tomsick of Mentor spent time working on the landscaping at St. Andrews Church. Both had been Girl Scouts for most of their lives and valued the opportunity to meet people all over Ohio.

“It’s a good community,” Tomsick said, one where she created “lifelong friendships.”

And last year, both received scholarships from the Girl Scouts to help them pay for college.

The Girl Scouts of North East Ohio gave out $16,000 in scholarships to 15 graduating seniors in 2011. These active Girl Scouts were involved in their communities. They found ways to give back, and they demonstrated leadership.

The number of scholarships and the amount given varies each year, according to information from the Girl Scouts of North East Ohio. Last year, scholarships varied from $500 to $3,000.

Tomsick, a freshman biology major at John Carroll University, said she used her scholarship to help pay for books. Kelemen, a freshman chemical engineering major at Purdue University, said the money helped during her first year. And it’s an easy application, she noted.

To apply, graduating Girl Scouts must have completed their Gold Award—a community service project—and have maintained at least a 2.0 grade point average. Girl Scouts must have been members of the organization for at least three years, including their junior and senior years of high school.

Applications for this year’s Girl Scouts of North East Ohio scholarship can be found on the organization’s website. There is a written essay portion, and letters of recommendation are required. Applications are due by April 1.
