School Board President Says The Board Has Negotiated “Lawfully”

Brecksville-Broadview Heights' school board President David Tryon reacts to the teacher union's Unfair Labor Practice charge.

David Tryon, president of the Brecksville-Broadview Heights Board of Education, doesn’t think the will stand up in a hearing.

“We believe that we acted lawfully,” Tryon said.

The union—the Brecksville-Broadview Heights Education Association—filed an Unfair Labor Practice charge against the board with the State Employment Relations Board on April 11. The charge alleges that the board’s negotiation news website, which has published the contract proposals from both sides, is “an attempt to create ill will” toward the association. The charge further says that the board is not negotiating in good faith and is attempting to directly deal.

Association spokesman Joe Zenir said the board’s website doesn’t show everything that goes into negotiations, and that proposals are just meant to be a starting point.

Tryon said the website was done in the spirit of “openness and transparency,” and he believes the State Employment Relations Board will find the school board in the right.

The charges were provided by the State Employment Relations Board and can be found in the PDFs above.
