The approved the building of new band and visitor bleachers at theat a board meeting on Wednesday.
Dave York Sports will remove the current bleachers that were built in the 1960s and install new ones over the summer months. The district hopes the work will be completed before school starts, board president David Tryon said.
“There were two sets of bleachers that were in really bad shape and weren’t worth fixing. We needed to replace those,” Tryon said of the band bleachers. “To correct the safety problems with the visitor’s bleachers, that would require additional funds to fix that. So the prudent thing to do was to replace everything.”
The total bid is $246,950, and the new seats will meet with current safety and handicap guidelines. The visitor’s seating capacity will increase from 770 to 1,000.
The will chip in $50,000, and the district is expected to receive an additional $3,646 for the old bleachers scrap value, making the total cost $193,304 for the district. Tryon said no operating funds will be used for the project.
Tryon said the old seats were transferred to the current stadium from the school’s previous field on . The seats were showing wear and a handful of spectators have had a few near mishaps, but Tryon said no one was injured.
Tryon said the additional seats might allow the district to host postseason sporting events in the future.
