Sign-up for BeeKeepers Summer Camp Underway

Students in the elementary and middle schools can take part in a variety of activities and trips this summer.

Registration for the Brecksville-Broadview Heights BeeKeepers Summer Discovery Camp at began today.

The camp, which runs from June 13 until Aug. 20, is open to students who have completed kindergarten through those entering the 8th grade, said district coordinator Linda Hemperley.

Students who enroll in the summer camp will have the chance to choose between a variety of activities. There are three separate “camps” in the morning and another three in the afternoon, each one with a separate theme. Students may choose to stay in one camp for the entire 10 weeks, or they may alternate by the week, depending on their interest, Hemperley said.

“It give them a lot of flexibility in picking and choosing what they think they want to do,” Hemperley said.

The morning camps include:

  • Sports: Hemperley said each week will focus on a new sport, such as golf or rollerblading. For some sports, like flag football, the program will have an alternative like dance.
  • Theater: Students will learn a new play each week. Hemperley said they won’t have to memorize lines, though; instead, they will read from the scripts.
  • Wilderness: The students in the wilderness camps will do outdoor activities, such as going on hikes.

The afternoon camps include:

  • Art: Hemperley said students will get to use a different medium, like photography or pottery, each week.
  • Science: These sessions will be filled with hands-on experiences.
  • Memory books and journals: Hemperley said that students who choose this camp will get to chronicle their experiences throughout the summer.

Students can also opt to take a reading lab in the afternoon, instead of one of the camps, Hemperley said, and they have free time in between. On Tuesdays, that free time is used for swimming, and on Wednesdays, students take field trips. Camps are not usually divided by age, but Hemperley said age-appropriate activities are planned and sports are played in experience-appropriate groups. Students will also have the chance to show off what they learned over the summer on a family day near the end of the program, Hemperley said.

Families who want their students to participate in the camps can choose which weeks to participate, or even which days. Hemperley said some families choose to sign up just on Tuesdays or Wednesdays to take part in the swimming and field trips. Families are billed just for the days students sign up to attend.

“The camp is set up so that it meets the needs of a lot of different families,” she added.

More information about the programs, activities and fees is available on the district’s website. Hemperley said families can register through the end of the school year, but she said that anyone with a particular interest in a camp or theme should sign up soon, because camps may have attendance caps.
