Support Staff Union Passes Strike Authorization Vote

The vote allows the Brecksville-Broadview Heights Organization of Support Staff to go on strike if a contract agreement is not reached with the school board.

The Brecksville-Broadview Heights Organization of Support Staff passed a strike authorization vote on Friday, calling the school board’s recent messages “misleading and untruthful” in a press release.

The vote, which would allow the union to strike if a new contract agreement is not reached, passed by a 91 percent margin, according to the release. The organization represents about 250 classified employees of the district.

Board President David Tryon said Friday's vote is “very disappointing,” because the staff union and the board are still in the middle of negotiations. Tryon said the board intends to continue those negotiation sessions.

The union’s press release said that the Brecksville-Broadview Heights Organization of Support Staff does not want a strike, but it fears the board will unilaterally implement a contract, overriding the collective bargaining process.
