Whiz Kids: Brecksville-Broadview Heights Speech and Debate, Math, Chemistry and Art Stars

Nominate an awesome kid you know to be a Whiz Kid today!

For this week’s Whiz Kids, we’re offering an extra congratulations to the students recognized during . The board took some time at the beginning of the meeting to highlight some students who have performed well outside of school and sports this year. 

Not all of the students were in attendance on Tuesday, but they all deserve to be highlighted as Whiz Kids!

Key to Awesomeness: These are all competitions the students entered outside of their regular school responsibilities, which takes some extra dedication.

The following list was provided by the Brecksville-Broadview Heights City School District:

Members of the , the high school’s speech and debate team:

  • Austin Price, who was a team captain, a state qualifier, a national alternate qualifier and who will represent the school at a national competition this summer
  • Lauren Yeh, who was a national alternate qualifier and a state semi-finalist
  • Hannah Olsen, who was a state finalist
  • Melissa Michaud, who was a team captain, a national alternate qualifier and a state qualifier
  • Brendan Balasko, who was a team captain

Math competition winners:

  • Cindy Zhao, who won 1st place in the Ohio Council of Teachers of Mathematics (OCTM) Individual State Math Competition and was the 2011 state champion, and who was a high state scorer in the math league competition
  • Aaron Markowitz, who won 1st place in the OCTM Individual State Math Competition
  • Dan Bonamer, who won 1st place in the OCTM Individual State Math Competition and was a high state scorer in the math league competition
  • Megan Zhao, who won 1st place in the OCTM Individual State Math Competition
  • Matt Rader, who was a high state scorer in the math league competition
  • Clay Myatt, who was a high state scorer in the math league competition

The district’s 2011 National Chemistry Olympiad Qualifiers:

  • Cindy Zhao 
  • Christine Soong

A national award winner in the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards:

  • Jenna Macy
