Brecksville-Broadview Heights Girls Win State Gymnastics Title

The Bees score 146.600 points and edge out Hudson (144.325) and Magnificat (143.150) for crown.

The Brecksville-Broadview Heights gymnastics team edged out Hudson and Rocky River to win their eighth straight OHSAA state championship on Friday at Hilliard Bradley High School.

The Bees finished with 146.600 overall points, followed by Hudson (144.325), Magnificat (143.150), Mentor (140.550) and Strongsville (136.375). Brecksville-Broadview Heights finished first overall in the vault (37.675) and beam (35.650), and second – to Hudson – in both the bars (36.775) and the floor exercise (36.500).

On the bars, top individual performances for the Bees’ include sophomore Jessie Matia and freshman Michaela Romito, who scored with 9.225 and 9.125, respectively. In addition to Matia’s fourth-place and Romito’s sixth-place finishes, other Brecksville-Broadview Heights results include sophomores Mea Weaver (9.100) and Madison Weisbarth (8.850). Hudson’s Bridget Madel was the event winner with a score of 9.575.

Painesville Riverside’s Maria Salvia finished first on the beam with a score of 9.375, narrowly edging out Romito (9.350), who finished second. Other Bees’ results include Weisbarth (9.200, fifth place) and sophomore Michelle Moock (8.825).

The floor exercise saw 17 of the 36 event participants score with a 9.000 or better, with Romito topping the field with a 9.500. Romito’s teammates also fared well, which include Weisbarth (9.150), sophomore Sarah Miller (9.025), and Matia (8.725). Creston Norwayne’s Katelyn Moore was the event runner-up with 9.475.

Avon’s Whitney Stoops finished at the top of the class in her event, winning the individual vault event with a score of 9.700, ahead of Perrysburg’s Chelsea Williams (9.550) and Magnificat’s Kelly Nortz (9.500). Bees Matia (9.375, fourth place) and Romito (9.350, tie-fifth place) would round out event’s top-five. Weisbarth (9.250), Miller (9.125), and junior Juliana Kivett (8.975) scored for Brecksville-Broadview Heights.

Nortz and Stoops finished first and second overall in the all-around with scores of 37.475 and 37.375, respectively. Brecksville-Broadview Heights’ Romito finished third with 37.325. Other Bees’ who finished in the top-36 include Weisbarth (36.450), Matia (35.425), and Weaver (35.100).
