Brecksville-Broadview Heights Student's Video Featured on MTV
Aaron Shutway's amazing basketball shot has earned him some viral video fame.
Brecksville-Broadview Heights’ Aaron Shutway has become a bit of a celebrity—again.
Shutway, a junior at , got his first taste of fame about two years ago, when he sunk an unbelievable basket in the middle school’s gym. The feat was captured on video and soon went viral, earning Shutway press from local and national media. Here’s an article Cleveland.com did on Shutway’s shot, which includes the video.
Shutway said he was in gym near the end of his eighth grade year, and a friend challenged him to try a front-flip throw with a basketball. The friend had seen Shutway do that on the soccer field, but this was a different story. Shutway said he tried all period, and a teacher let him get out of class to try again during second period. As that period ended, he asked for one more shot, finally making it.
This past week, Shutway’s eighth-grade shot was pulled from the archives and featured on MTV’s Ridiculousness, a viral video show hosted by Rob Dyrdek.
Shutway said he got a call from Ridiculousness this summer, asking if they could feature his video. He wasn’t sure if they were actually going to use it until a friend told him he saw the preview with his video.
Shutway said he’s a fan of Dyrdek, and he thinks the show is funny, so he was excited to see it. The stunt was featured in a segment called “You Could Not Do That Again If You Tried.” (The segment begins around 4 minutes. Shutway’s video is featured at 5 minutes. The full episode can be seen here—some salty language and dangerous activities are included.)
Shutway’s video clip got a big reaction from the crowd and the members of the show, which Shutway thought was pretty cool. But Shutway said the show was wrong about one thing—he did make that shot again, one year later, and there’s a YouTube video to prove it. A quick warning—the celebration after Shutway sinks the shot is pretty loud, and there may be some profanity.
Shutway doesn’t want his 15 minutes of fame to be his last—in fact, he said the experience has sparked his interest in film and TV. He was even an extra in the movie .
“It’s just been a fun experience,” Shutway said.
