Brecksville-Broadview Heights Sweep Avon Lake

Girls swim team wins, 131-54; set sights on Southwestern Conference championship next week at Westlake.

The Brecksville-Broadview Heights girls swim team moved closer to its next goal after besting Avon Lake, 131-54, to run its record in Southwestern Conference action to 7-0 in the final meet of the regular season.

"We want to win the conference," said head coach Mike Schmidt, whose team travels next weekend to the Westlake Recreation Center for the conference championship meet.

"Some of our kids will have their season end at the sectional, but we expect to advance a number to the district meet and hopefully to the state meet," the Bees coach said.

The Bees boys, who topped the Shoremen, 115-62, are in the middle of the SWC pack with a 3-4 record, but hope to move up in the conference meet.

"We've lost a number of close meets on the boys'  side and are 4-5 in the league, but we are hopeful of finishing either third or fourth," said Schmidt, who was dripping wet after going for a dip in the pool courtesy of his team after the final home meet.

The Bees had things go their way on both sides, with the girls taking seven of eight individual events and the boys grabbing five of eight against the Shoremen.

The seven winners for the Bees girls were boosted by double-win nights from Leandra Trudeau and Jacqueline Zola.

Trudeau won the 200 individual medley with a time of 2 minutes, 26.63 seconds and added the 100 breast with a 1:13.49; Alyssa Pugely was second at 1:20.29.

Zola won the 50 freestyle and then came back to claim the 500 freestyle. In the 50 freestyle, she led a 1-2-3 Bees finish with a 26.98 followed by Megan Zart (27.17) and Lauren Kata (27.56).

In the 500 freestyle, Zola went 5:43.43 with Zart again in the hunt at 5:49.30 for second.

The other Bees in the win column include Emma Schlabig (200 freestyle), Katie Wilczewski (100 butterfly), and Kelly Roddy (100 freestyle).

Schlabig took the 200 freestyle with a 2:10.05 with Wilczewski second at 2:10.70. Wilczewski took the 100 butterfly in 1:05.45 while Roddy claimed the 100 freestyle  in 58.9.  Lauren Turner of the Bees placed second in 1:00.39.

In diving, Hannah Cleveland of Brecksville finished second with 200.40 points behind Avon Lake's Morgan Srail. Srail posted a personal best of 283.50 points.

The Brecksville boys got two individual firsts from Tyler Kotchman, who won the 100 backstroke and the 200 individual medley, along with firsts from Ryan Ainger, Cam Kessler and Adam Ryan. Logan Resparc of the Bees was second to Avon Lake's Tyler Nock in diving.

Kotchman secured the individual medley with a 2:12.72 and the 100 backstroke in 1:00.51. Ainger was tops in the 50 freestyle with a 23.08 where the Bees got a second from Ryan Charbonneau with a 24.67. Kessler came from lane one to win the 100 butterfly with a 1:03.85 and Ryan led a 1-2-3 Bees finish in the 100 breaststroke with a 1:09.17, followed by Kessler (1:14.46) and Wes Peterson (1:14.97).
