Brecksville-Broadview Heights Wrestlers Win SWC Tourney

Bees win six individual titles, four runner-ups; prepare for Sectionals next weekend.

Kyle Roddy perhaps summed up Brecksville- Broadview Heights' day at the SWC tournament best when he said, "This just shows that hard work really pays off."

The Brecksville-Broadview Heights wrestling team scored 224 points to outpace Olmsted Falls (190) to take home the Southwestern Conference title. Even more impressive was the fact the Bees had 10 of its grapplers wrestling in the finals.

In all, the Bees crowned six champions, four runner-ups and two third-place finishers.

Leading the way was Roddy (160 pounds), who placed sixth at last year's state championships. The senior standout went 3-0, including a 16-0 tech fall in his first match over Amherst's Mike Wearsch. Roddy pinned Midpark's Kyle Koncek in 4:45 during his second match, and pinned North Olmsted's Thaer Zayed in 3:37 to win the finals.

Roddy seemed to be very motivated in his championship win as he didn't give any takedowns on his feet.

"It feels pretty good," Roddy said. "I won this last year, but wanted it really bad this year, so I could set the pace for the post season. You have to continue to work hard and practice everyday, because if you win, its sends a message and sets you up for the next level."

Dylan Good (135), who upped his record to 25-7 on the year, also scored a pin in his championship match, stopping Olmsted Falls' Alex Bevilacqua at the 4:43 mark. Good only wrestled one other match, and allowed just an escape in a 16-1 technical fall over Berea's Jacob Jazwa.

George Saridakis (145) won his championship match, 7-1, over Midpark's Ryan Scholtz. He also had a 13-3 major decision over Olmsted Falls' Brian Slater and a close 4-2 decision over Mike Sliman of Amherst.

Mitch Baran (130) earned a hard-fought 4-3 decision over North Olmsted's Brian Brunner to claim his title. Prior to his championship, Baran had a 16-0 technical fall over Alex Funderburg of Amherst and pinned Avon Lake's D.J. Murdock in 4:32 to open up the day.

One of the more exciting matches of the night that kept fans on their feet was Quinton Hiles (140).

Hiles downed C.J. Basinski of Amherst, 2-0, with the match still up in the air until the clock hit :00.

Marshal Willet could only smile after his match with Avon Lake's Caleb Rojek at 171 pounds. After recording a 26-11 technical fall over Olmsted Falls' Travis Devericks, Willet's match against Rojeck was expected to be a test of wills. It lasted just 46 seconds as Rojek pulled up with a knee injury. Willet was awarded the championship via default.

Tommy Pruchinski and Anthony D'Amico, along with Jake Bonfig and Andrew Barr, all took home second place.

Barr's match against Westlake's Sheldon Stuckart had fans on their feet as he almost took down Stuckart at the buzzer for a championship, but lost 3-2.

Troy Lang (189) took home third place with his 4-3 win over Avon Lake's Matt Sokolow, while Austin Linden won his consolation match (5-2) over Trevor Winston of North Olmsted.

"We wrestled well," said Bees coach Todd Haverdill. "The focus in our room and our program is to continue to get better each week, peak at the right time at the end of the year, and I think we are doing that. We won a lot of close matches today, so I think we are doing well."

Brecksville-Broadview Heights gets back into action next weekend as Sectionals begin at North Royalton High School.
