Summer Fun Around Brecksville

Brecksville provides plenty of ways to keep kids busy in the summer.

Keeping kids busy—no matter what age—can be a challenge in the summer.

Here are just a few of the summer activities that can be found around the city. Feel free to add suggestions in the comment section below to add to our list.

An educational activity

The Cuyahoga County Public Library’s Summer Reading Game runs from June 4 through August 6. With prizes as incentives, the program gets kids into reading to prevent a decline in proficiency during the months off, said Brecksville branch manager Cathy Schultis.

“It’s a great time for them to be able to read what they want,” Schultis said. “It’s really fun for us to help them find things they like.”

The prizes are based on two-hour increments of reading that are kept track on the “Read Around the World” theme board. Adults can join their kids in the reading fun by entering into the adult portion of the program, which is tracked by number of books finished.

To beat summer heat

The Brecksville Community Center provides swim lessons for children of all ages. Classes in different skill levels are available for two-week sessions all summer. The sessions cost $45 for members, $55 for residents and $65 for non-residents.

"Swimming has always been a family thing that everyone can participate in," said Erin Kubat, assistant aquatic coordinator at the center.

She noted that families can come to cool off by the pool no matter if they take lessons or not.

Get creative

Broadview Heights Spotlights has theater camps, "Just My Size" and "Theater Camp," running this summer.

According to the Broadview Heights Spotlights website,"Just My Size" is for ages 4 to 6 and runs from July 25 through July 29. "Theater Camp" is for 7th grade and older. The camp runs from August 1 through August 5.

The Brecksville Theater on the Square also has information about its summer camp on its website. The camp starts July 11.

Call the theaters to see if there are still open spaces in the camps.
