The Department of Human Services Honors Volunteers

The department will take time during a brunch today to honor its many volunteers.

Brecksville's Human Services Department will be honoring those who help the department run during the Human Services Volunteer Tea at noon today.

The tea is an annual event put on to show appreciation for all the volunteers who work in the Department. The volunteers work in many different areas of the city, helping with services and activities for older and physically challenged residents.

"The luncheon is so much fun because you can sit and share with everyone who is a volunteer," said Brecksville resident and Human Services volunteer Monica Dooley.

Dooley has been a resident for more than 50 years, and she said that "it's amazing" how many people in the city volunteer.

And they're responsible for a lot of the work in the department. Director of Human Services, Ted Lux, had some examples of the work the volunteers do:

  • Prepare, serve and clean up after community breakfasts and lunches
  • Drive residents to medical appointments, on errands and to restaurants and mall trips
  • Take free blood pressure readings
  • Knit winter scarves for underprivileged children
  • Assist the front desk with administrative work

The recognition tea is for volunteers of the Human Services Department only; the number of volunteers doesn't leave room in the venue for guests.
