It seems there's no alleged crime too bizarre to occur in Northeast Ohio. Here are some of this week's weird calls and charges. All information was provided by police reports from departments in Patch communities. Threatening Words: Though an Akron man returned the clothing he tried to steal from Walmart, he still ended up in a Fairlawn Police cruiser. He also had some threatening words for the arresting officer. Derek Sampson, 50, tried to walk out of Walmart in Fairlawn on May 13 with three pairs of shorts. When a security officer confronted him, Sampson returned the items. Officers arrested him for theft when he tried to exit again. The following incidents were reported by the Brecksville Police Department from May 7 to 8. The information was compiled from police reports. Criminal mischief A Brecksville man reported criminal mischief on May 8. The man’s car had been sprayed with a clear, oily liquid twice within one week. The car was inside the garage for rental properties on Carriage Hill, which means there is limited access to who can get inside. The man who filed the complaint and another resident who was subletting the garage spot to him were asked to monitor their vehicles. Crane hits overpass, wires Police received a call at 7:18 p.m. on May 7 that a truck on Interstate 77 may have lost part of the load it was carrying. When police got there, they saw a flatbed …

Mock Car Crash Reminds Students of the Dangers of Driving Drunk

The presentation took place Wednesday morning at Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School.

Students gathered in the bleachers at Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School Wednesday morning to watch local police, fire and EMS participate in a mock car crash. The presentation showed students what could happen in a drunk driving accident. The simulation took place just three days before the high school’s prom. “I don’t ever want that call,” Principal Joseph Mueller said to the students after the presentation. He noted that he has received such a call as principal twice before, reflecting on the grief felt in the community. He urged the students to use good judgment, not just on prom weekend, but also during graduation, over the summer, after football games—all the time. “Life is about choices,” Mueller said. “And we need you to …

A Look at Police Calls to the Now-Famous Brecksville Bridge

Most of the calls related to the bridge in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park are more concerned with people’s safety, not threats to others.

The state Route 82 bridge connecting Brecksville and Sagamore Hills got quite a bit of press at the beginning of the month when five men were arrested for allegedly planning to blow it up, but it’s not the only time it’s been the site of suspicious activity. Usually, the police department receives calls for the bridge in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park because people see someone that they think might jump, said Police Chief Richard E. Mannarino. The department receives calls from concerned citizens every few months, and all but one in the past few years has ended safely. There has been one death in the past year. Questioned in the Nude: Twinsburg Police didn't learn much about a stolen-money accusation on May 3, but they were exposed to a naked man. The unexpected showing occurred during officers' second trip to the Warren Parkway residence that day. Police came earlier because a woman was screaming for help outside. The following incidents were reported by the Brecksville Police Department from May 2 to 5. The information was compiled from police reports. Traffic stop leads to a felony drug charge Police pulled a car over for speeding on Interstate 77 at 3:04 a.m. on May 5. The driver, a 22-year-old Kent man, told police he didn’t have a license, and was driving because he was the only person in the car who knew how to get to Akron. The officer could smell marijuana, and a passenger said that they had smoked it earlier. The officer asked the driver to step out of the car and frisked him for weapons or contraband, finding a bag in his pocket. The driver said it was marijuana, but when the officer opened the bag, there was a small pink tablet inside. …

The following incidents were reported by the Brecksville Police Department from April 30 to May 2. The information was compiled from police reports. Vandalism reported at Chippewa Elementary School Employees from Chippewa Elementary School called the police on May 2 to report a damaged skylight. A custodian had noticed that it was leaking the night of April 30th, and went on the roof the next day to check it out. It looked like someone had gotten on the roof and kicked the skylight. There were bits of the broken light inside the fixture. Man needs help getting home An officer was called to Lubrizol at 9:48 p.m. on April 30 regarding a man in the company’s lobby.
