With the Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School prom set for Saturday, the Community Awareness and Prevention Association is promoting its “Prom Promise” initiative, encouraging students to make healthy choices. "Be the Majority...Choose Not to Use" is a CAPA campaign designed to keep students from drinking and/or using drugs. The organization also highlighting its “Parent Who Host Lose the Most” campaign. A recent CAPA news release featured a 2011 survey, noting that 24 percent of BBHHS students reported, “they attended gatherings or parties in which parents permitted or purchased alcohol for student use.” Throughout the week students will have the opportunity to participate in a number of fun activities promoting the "Majority" …

Matt Adrianowycz could represent Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School in the international competition this summer.
Matt Adrianowycz, a Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School senior, has been named a Chemistry Olympiad national finalist. The honor makes him one of the top 20 high school chemistry students in the United States, according to a media release. Adrianowycz will attend a study camp at the US Air Force Academy in June for two weeks. This is the third consecutive year that BBHHS has had a student qualify as one of the top 20 chemistry students in the nation and attend this camp. The top four students from the study camp will then represent the US at the International Chemistry Olympiad which will be held in Moscow, Russia in July 2013. Approximately 10,000 U.S. students participate in local Chemistry Olympiad competitions. Exams are …
Rochester Institute of Technology team — featuring Brecksville's own Bryan Delaney — took home the first-place trophy for the first time in school history at the 2013 National Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition.
The third time's the charm for Rochester Institute of Technology's cyber defense team. And a Brecksville native was a part of making history for the college. After being bested in the finals for two years in a row, an RIT team — featuring Brecksville's own Bryan Delaney — took home the first-place trophy for the first time in school history at the 2013 National Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition. Delaney, a networking and system administration graduate student part of the winning team along with seven other students, according to a news release. In RIT's fourth trip to nationals in six years, the student team beat second-place Dakota State University and third-place Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in the largest college-level cyber …

Students from Brecksville and Broadview Heights won $2,500 in scholarships.
Three area students, two from Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School, have been announced as National Merit Scholarship winners. Matthew A. Adrianowycz and Cindy S. Zhao attend school in Brecksville while Isabelle M. Hanna goes to Padua Franciscan. All three won $2,500 each and were part of 2,500 winners chosen from a pool of 15,000 across the nation. Adrianowycz plans to study pharmeceutical science, Hanna plans to study molecular biology and Zhao is undecided. National Merit $2500 Scholarship winners are the finalists in each state judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies. Voters in the Brecksville-Broadview Heights School District passed a 7.4-mill renewal levy on the ballot on Tuesday. The renewal levy — known on the ballot as Issue 12 — will continue to cost the owner of a $100,000 home $12.66 per month, district Treasurer Rick Berdine said. The levy was first passed in 1988 and brings in about $4.8 million a year. Passage of the renewal would not raise taxes, but keep taxes at the current level. This renewal levy is being placed on the ballot as a continuing levy. “It represents 11 percent of our current operating budget,” Berdine recently told Brecksville Patch. “Not passing this …

For its rankings, Newsweek sent out a survey to more than 5,000 high schools in the U.S., with about 2,500 schools responding in 2013. You can see the details about Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School's ranking, and every other ranked high school by clicking on the markers in the interactive map above. The survey scores were then weighted and calculated using several criteria including on-time graduation and college acceptance rates.
