Brecksville’s Frequent Blood Drives Help the Red Cross Meet Local Needs

The next blood drive is Thursday.

“Urgent Need!” “Blood Donors Needed” These phrases, along with the recognizable American Red Cross logo, are a common sight in Brecksville. According to the American Red Cross, 58 blood drives were held in Brecksville from July 1, 2010 to June 30, 2011, the organization's fiscal year. The blood drives resulted in 2,212 “productive procedures” – procedures where the standard pint of blood was able to be collected and separated into red blood cells, platelets and plasma, Communications Manager for the Northern Ohio Blood Services Region Christy Chapman said in an email. During that same time period, 59,276 procedures were completed throughout all of Cuyahoga County. That means nearly 4 percent of the blood collected in the county came from …

City Council is holding a special meeting to appoint a new law director at 9 a.m. on Monday. State Representatives Marlene Anielski and Mike Dovilla are hosting a meeting with local business owners Tuesday at Broadview Heights City Hall. From the start of school to local events, there’s plenty going on this week in Brecksville.

There’s a blood drive from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Monday at Stautzenberger College. According to the American Red Cross website, donors will be entered into a contest for a chance to go to Disney World.  The Brecksville-Broadview Heights Board of Education meets at 7 p.m. Monday. According to the agenda, the board will approve new textbooks for a few high school classes, the bus routes for the 2011-2012 school year and a number of other resolutions.  And school starts on Wednesday for Brecksville-Broadview Heights students, according to the district’s website. Wintry Weather Makes For Dip in Blood Supply

The Red Cross has issued a national appeal for blood after severe winter weather forced cancellation of more than 14,000 blood drives nationwide. Red Cross officials say they haven't seen a similar blood supply shortage in 10 years. "Because of winter weather Ohio has had to cancel 25 blood drives in January," Christy Chapman, communications manager of The Northern Ohio American Red Cross said. Weather is not the sole cause of blood shortage; others have stayed away because of colds and the flu, she said.   "When we have to cancel blood drives we don't have the opportunity to collect and this has caused an overall shortage," Chapman said.  Shortages are more severe for blood types O negative and A negative., Chapman said.
