According to the American Red Cross, 58 blood drives were held in Brecksville from July 1, 2010 to June 30, 2011, the organization's fiscal year. The blood drives resulted in 2,212 “productive procedures” – procedures where the standard pint of blood was able to be collected and separated into red blood cells, platelets and plasma, Communications Manager for the Northern Ohio Blood Services Region Christy Chapman said in an email. The Red Cross has issued a national appeal for blood after severe winter weather forced cancellation of more than 14,000 blood drives nationwide. Red Cross officials say they haven't seen a similar blood supply shortage in 10 years. "Because of winter weather Ohio has had to cancel 25 blood drives in January," Christy Chapman, communications manager of The Northern Ohio American Red Cross said. Weather is not the sole cause of blood shortage; others have stayed away because of colds and the flu, she said. "When we have to cancel blood drives we don't have the opportunity to collect and this has caused an overall shortage," Chapman said.
