Ohio Democrats: Senate Bill 5 Fight Will Galvanize the Party This November

Northeast Ohio Democrats surveyed by Patch were unanimous in believing last year's Senate Bill 5 fight will help Barack Obama reclaim the White House.

Northeast Ohio Democrats believe last year's fight over a Republican-led effort to clamp down on union rights will help Barack Obama reclaim the White House. Patch's Democratic influencers agreed in a survey that the Senate Bill 5 fight, which culminated in a decisive victory for union interests in Ohio last year, will galvanize party members and help Obama's re-election fight in this crucial swing state. Not one Democrat surveyed thought 2011's union fight would hurt Obama or the party in this year's election. The Senate Bill 5 effort was led by Gov. John Kasich, a Republican rising star who took a major hit after having his signature initiative defeated in November 2011. Democrats surveyed said Kasich's over-reaching helped organize …

Ohio Democrats Unsure If Economy Will Help or Hurt President Obama in November

Local Democrats want to see the president focus on the positives in the state’s economy.

Northeast Ohio Democrats are divided on whether the state’s economy will help or hurt President Barack Obama’s campaign this fall. In Patch’s most recent survey of influential party members in Northeast Ohio, Democratic insiders were split on how they thought the economy would affect the election this fall, but they knew they wanted the president to focus on the positives and tie failures to the competition. About 45 percent of all respondents thought Ohio’s economy would hurt the president’s chances of winning the state this November. About a third thought it would help the campaign, and almost 20 percent were neutral. But the Democrats we surveyed were united in thinking that Obama should focus on the positives in Ohio’s economy, …

Ohio Democrats Split On Whether Gun Control Can Be A Winning Issue

Despite a renewed debate about guns in the wake of the Aurora, Colo., Northeast Ohio Democratic Insiders are divided on whether gun control could be a winning issue for Democrats this November.

Despite the renewed debate over gun control since the mass murder in Aurora, Colo., Northeast Ohio Democrats are mixed on whether the issue can be a winning one for their party this Fall. In Patch's latest survey of influential party members in Northeast Ohio, Democratic insiders were mixed on whether gun control was a battle worth fighting. About half said they thought the issue could galvanize the state's Democrats in November, but the other half also said that would be bad politics considering the strength of pro-gun interest groups and the overall acceptance of guns by Ohioans. "Gun control is bad politics in Ohio," said one insider who responded to the survey. "Only three Ohio Governors in the forty years since Kent State have been …
