The teachers’ union will still hold a press conference at 5:45 p.m.
The special Brecksville-Broadview Heights Board of Education meeting that was scheduled for 6 p.m. on Monday has been canceled, according to an email from the district. The majority of the meeting was scheduled to be in executive session, which is closed to the public. According to the email, the meeting was canceled due to a "lack of information necessary" for the executive session. The Brecksville-Broadview Heights Education Association is planning a press conference for 5:45 p.m. outside the Education Center, where the board meeting was going to be held. That press conference will still go on as planned, said Joe Zenir, spokesman for the association.

The Brecksville-Broadview Heights Education Association is planning to hold a press conference before the school board meeting.
The majority of the Brecksville-Broadview Heights Board of Education meeting on Monday will be closed to the public, but that won’t keep the teachers from speaking their minds. On Monday, the Brecksville-Broadview Heights Education Association plans to hold a press conference and make an announcement regarding its plans for the start of the school year, said Todd Jaeck. Jaeck is a labor relations consultant from the Ohio Education Association who has been representing the teachers union. The press conference will begin at 5:45 p.m.—15 minutes before the board meeting—and will be held right outside the Education Center. The union isn’t giving away the announcement at this time. On the BeesStaff Twitter account, followers were encouraged to …

Brecksville-Broadview Heights school board President David Tryon said pay-to-participate fees would be refunded.
If the teachers strike this fall, all extracurricular activities—including sports—would be suspended, said Brecksville-Broadview Heights Board of Education President David Tryon. Tryon said in an email that the board, the administration and the athletic department were concerned with the “safety of the participants, the security issues and the needed coaching support” in the event of a strike. “We’re doing our best to negotiate in good faith,” Tryon said. The board and the Brecksville-Broadview Heights Education Association are scheduled to resume negotiations with the federal mediator on Aug. 16, Tryon said. Additional dates are scheduled for Aug. 21 and 24. The school board declared an impasse and announced its intentions to bring in a …

The Sun Star-Courier is reporting that fall sports would be suspended for Brecksville-Broadview Heights students if there is a strike this fall. The Brecksville-Broadview Heights Education Association passed a strike authorization vote in early July, allowing them to issue a strike notice if an agreement with the board is not reached. The two parties have been in contract negotiations since March. The Board of Education, the association and a federal mediator met last week, but no news has come out of those meetings as of yet. Have you heard anything about athletics or other extracurricular activities being suspended if there is a strike? Tell us in the comments or email Local Editor Rachel Abbey McCafferty.

We compare the proposals from the Brecksville-Broadview Heights Board of Education and Education Association.
Last month, I asked you what you wanted to know about the Brecksville-Broadview Heights schools contract negotiations. One of the common topics that both teachers and community members have brought up on the site and in school board meetings is the proposed changes to the special education section of the contract, section 19. Here's a look at the proposals: What is it? There is a specific section—Section 19—in both the current contract and the two proposals that defines “least restrictive environment.” Essentially, that means that a student with special needs will have an individualized plan to fit their needs. They may spend part or all of their day in a special education classroom, or they may attend traditional classes with the help of …

We compare the proposals from the Brecksville-Broadview Heights Board of Education and Education Association.
Last week, I asked you for questions about the Brecksville-Broadview Heights schools contract negotiations. I’ve been collecting those questions, along with topics that have been coming up on other articles and in school board meetings, and looking for the answers. Here’s a look at one of the common topics that teachers and community members have raised: Planning time for teachers. What is it? Teachers have time planned into their daily schedules to do a variety of activities, such as prepare lessons, work with students or collaborate with other educators. During this round of negotiations, teachers have expressed concern over the cuts proposed by the school board. What did the last contract say? The last contract required 400 minutes of …

The Brecksville-Broadview Heights school board has also filed charges against individual teachers.
The Brecksville-Broadview Heights Board of Education and Education Association have accused each other of not fighting fair—officially. Both parties have filed Unfair Labor Practice charges with the State Employment Relations Board, related to this year’s contentious contract negotiations. Here's a look at the charges that have been filed in the past few months: A representative of the State Employment Relations Board said in an email that the five cases are still under investigation, and dates for the board to consider the cases have not been scheduled at this time. The charges were provided by the State Employment Relations Board and can be found in the PDFs above. For reactions and more details on the charges, check out the articles …
