Voters Pass Brecksville-Broadview Heights School Levy

Measure approved by nearly 1,000 votes.

Voters in the Brecksville-Broadview Heights School District passed a 7.4-mill renewal levy on the ballot on Tuesday. The renewal levy — known on the ballot as Issue 12 — will continue to cost the owner of a $100,000 home $12.66 per month, district Treasurer Rick Berdine said. The levy was first passed in 1988 and brings in about $4.8 million a year. Passage of the renewal would not raise taxes, but keep taxes at the current level. Residents in the Brecksville-Broadview Heights School District will vote on a 7.4-mill renewal levy on the ballot on the May 7 ballot. The renewal levy would continue to cost the owner of a $100,000 home $12.66 per month, district Treasurer Rick Berdine said. “This is not a tax increase as this levy has been in place for 25 years,” he said. “It has been renewed previously four times.   The levy was first passed in 1988 and brings in about $4.8 million a year. Joe Vadini, Legendary Football Coach, Dies at 83

Calling hours are scheduled to take place at Ripepi and Sons on Bagley Road from 2 to 4 p.m. and 5 to 8 p.m. April 4. The funeral is slated to take place at Holy Family Church in Parma at 10 a.m. April 5.

A legend in the classroom and the football field in the Brecksville-Broadview Heights School District has died. Joe Vadini died on Easter with his family at his side.  It was also his 83rd birthday. Friends and former players remembered him as a great coach and teacher, family man and mentor to many.  “He was a great guy, and he was very tuned in to football,” said friend and former player Jim Lid, who played for Vadini in the early 1960s. “He was also a role model; he cared for his players; he was a good coach. Above all he was a friend. He had a softer side.” “He was a big role model in my life — second only to my dad.” In 1983, Vadini announced he was leaving the Brecksville-Broadview Heights school district after 25 years as its head …

The Brecksville-Broadview Heights School Board of Education will place a 7.4-mill renewal levy on the May ballot.  To educate the public on the tax, the district recently posted a 5-minute video to the district's website, explaining what the levy is and what it means to the community. In the video, which includes a brief question and answer format, Superintendent Scot Prebles leads a conversation with district treasurer, Richard Berdine. The replacement levy, they said, won't raise taxes and won't generate any additional money for the district.

2013 Kindergarten Registration March 19-20; All-Day Kindergarten Available

If your child is turning 5 by Sept. 30th, it's time to register.

Registration for your new kindergartener for Brecksville-Broadview Heights schools begins March 19 (8 a.m. to 4 p.m.) and 20 (12 p.m. to 8 p.m.) at the Education Center on Mill Road in Brecksville.  Optional tuition-based all day kindergarten also is available. All the details on what you need to bring are listed on the school district's website, so make sure to check it before you go. Not only will you need a birth certificate, proof of residency and immunization records but you may also need to bring custody papers, according to the district's website. School Board OK’s Drug-Testing Policy

While that may seem like common sense, pre-employment drug screening wasn’t a policy in place until the school board approved the measure on Monday night.

New hires at the Brecksville-Broadview Heights School District will now be required to take a drug test. While that may seem like common sense, pre-employment drug screening wasn’t a policy in place until the school board approved the measure on Monday night. District treasurer Rick Berdine said the policy wasn’t based on any particular incident. It’s just a housekeeping measure, he added. “This applies to future new hires for the district, and is part of regularly reviewing policies and procedures for updating,” said Berdine.
