The organization can now officially support Romney’s campaign.
It’s official—the Cuyahoga Valley Republicans are endorsing Mitt Romney for president. The endorsement process allows the Cuyahoga Valley Republicans to throw its support—and money—behind a candidate as a group. Members of the grassroots conservative organization opted to endorse Romney at their regular meeting Thursday night at the Brecksville Community Center. The decision was far from unanimous, though. Romney received 56 percent of the vote. Rick Santorum wasn’t far behind, earning 50 percent of the vote. And 40 percent said they’d support “Anybody but Obama.” Members could vote for more than one candidate. President Dom Sciria told members before they voted that the organization doesn't spend money on a candidate without the members' …

It’s going to be a busy week in Brecksville.
Today is Presidents Day, and there are a number of offices closed. Here’s a quick look at some of them. Mayor Jerry N. Hruby will spend some time this week talking about the future of Brecksville. The casual “Conversation with the Mayor” event will take place at 2 p.m. on Tuesday at the Human Services Center. The event is designed to give residents a way to hear the news directly from the mayor and get their questions answered. And the formal State of the City address will take place Wednesday evening at the Human Services Center. More details are available on the Chamber of Commerce's website. City Council will meet at 8 p.m. Tuesday at City Hall. According to the agenda, council members will appoint a new police patrolman and a new …

The Cuyahoga Valley Republicans spent part of Wednesday night’s meeting talking about the upcoming primary.
Wednesday night, the roller coaster known as the Republican presidential primary played out on a local scale. The Cuyahoga Valley Republicans, a grassroots organization for northeast Ohio conservatives, has been conducting straw polls at its meetings to gauge its members’ interest in the different presidential hopefuls. The polls have seen candidates rise and fall out of favor, said member Al Bota—much like they have at the national level. During last night’s meeting at the Brecksville Human Services Center, the majority of members present put their support behind Mitt Romney. Here’s how the 110 votes broke down: Only one member put down a write-in candidate, something that stood out to Bota, the chairman of the candidate screening …

Dom Sciria was one of your choices for Brecksville Patch’s People of the Year.
At the end of 2011, I asked you to nominate Brecksville Patch’s People of the Year. Now, I’m sharing what made 2011 memorable for your nominees. See all the nominees here. When Dom Sciria thinks about what made 2011 memorable for him, it’s the people he spent it with that stand out, from his children and wife Kathy to his fellow volunteers in the city. As the chair of the city’s Planning Commission, the president of the Cuyahoga Valley Republicans and a member of the Bicentennial Committee, Sciria said he came into contact with a lot of “hardworking” and “dedicated” people. “It just made the year fly by,” Sciria said. There were a lot of milestones in his personal life, too, with his middle child graduating from college and his son …
