What’s Next for Issue 25?

The “money is not speech” issue requires the city to create a “Democracy Day” every two years.

Brecksville residents haven’t heard the last about Issue 25, the “money is not speech” issue on Tuesday's ballot.   The issue narrowly passed in the Nov. 6 election with about 52 percent of the vote, according to the unofficial numbers from the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections.  Part of the issue was to establish a “Democracy Day,” a meeting held in the February after a federal election to discuss the impact of political contributions on the city.  But the details of how this day will work are still up in the air. Rose Petsche, one of the residents behind Issue 25, said she hopes the city will allow the members of the group to help make the day a success. Is Money Free Speech? Brecksville Ballot Issue Raises the Question

In less than a week, Brecksville voters will decide whether they want the city to officially support ending the idea that money is speech. Issue 25 asks voters if they’re in favor of amending the U.S. constitution to say corporations aren’t people and money isn’t speech—essentially repealing the Citizens United decision that allowed money to flood the campaigns this election. It’s not something Brecksville can change on its own, but if passed, the city would have to send a letter letting state and federal representatives know it’s something Brecksville voters want. In the years to come you will be able to say that you helped to correct the mistake made by the Supreme Court when it voted 5-4 that Corporations and Unions are people.
