Five Questions With Mayor Jerry Hruby

Did you know that he’s a huge Walt Disney fan? Or that he’s an avid historian?

Brecksville Mayor Jerry Hruby is all business when it comes to running the city. He’s done it for the past 26 years. At his recent State of the City and Conversation with the Mayor, Hruby recapped the past year, and shared some thoughts on the future.  But it was all business.  We thought we’d take a few minutes to get to know the man behind the mayor’s desk a little better. For starters, he’s been married to his wife, Patricia, for 43 years.  What makes Brecksville the best place to live and work? Our location, amenities and schools. Young couples come here they want a good school system. Location is equally important. And we’ve got 33,000 acres of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park in our backyard.  What’s something people don’t know …

Development Eyed at I-77 and Route 82?

“We are hopeful that an outstanding opportunity will be announced and developed in the very near future,” said council president Greg Skaljac.

The city could be looking to attract some new business in the undeveloped area of Brecksville near Interstate 77 and State Route 82. Mayor Jerry Hruby hinted during his Conversation With the Mayor address that the city is considering development proposals, adding “we will have more news soon.” He went on to describe the burgeoning medical industry in Northeast Ohio, and how Brecksville plays a pivotal role — pointing out businesses like MediQuant. Then, on Monday, city council went into an executive session meeting to discuss the “economic development and real estate” near the State Route 82 and I-77 intersection.  No action was taken following the meeting. However, afterward, council president Greg Skaljac said that area has “had a lot of…

WATCH: Hruby Hosts ‘Conversation With the Mayor’

The event on Tuesday was a preview of sorts to the mayor’s annual State of the City address slated for Wednesday night.

Mayor Jerry Hruby hosted the “Conversation With the Mayor” event at the Brecksville Human Services Center on Tuesday. In his 26th year at the helm of the city, Hruby covered a range of topics — from the federal government’s impact on Brecksville to economic development. He’s expected to cover many of the same topics at his annual State of the City address this evening. Here are a few of the highlights: Financial position Hruby said that the city has taken a couple of financial blows since 2008 to present — to the tune of about $500,000. “We were ready for that,” he said. The city cut staff from about 170 to 127. He noted that Brecksville is on firm financial footing, pointing out Moody’s AAA bond rating — the highest rating possible. …

Mayor Hruby Encourages Voters to Support Brecksville-Broadview Heights Schools’ Renewal Levy

Mayor Jerry N. Hruby explains why he supports the renewal levy.

The following letter was submitted by Mayor Jerry N. Hruby’s office to Brecksville Patch. I was a member of the first Kindergarten class at Highland School when it first opened, a member of the first class that attended Highland Elementary K through 6. I graduated from Brecksville High in 1966. My two brothers and I attended a combined 40 years (1946-1966). The three of us received outstanding educations and non academic programs that enriched us and prepared us for all that we have experienced and accomplished during our lives. I recall we all were very proud of our school system and enjoyed the fact that its reputation was one of excellence, our programs exceptional and the teachers well respected and admired. I remember many of the …

Support for the school levey is good no matter how no matter what. I don't want to live in a city with a lot of turmoil. I like Friday night football a lot. I pay money to go to a peaceful place for vacation. I will pay money to keep the peace where I live. We are not cheap.   more ›

Quoted: Mayor Jerry Hruby Says President Barack Obama Has Failed Ohio

Mitt Romney's campaign released a statement from Hruby last week.

Mayor Jerry N. Hruby popped up in the national news last week when the Mitt Romney campaign released a statement of him expressing disappointment in President Barack Obama’s first term. Here's a link to The Washington Post's Wonkblog's take on it. Hruby is a representative of the GOP presidential hopeful in Cuyahoga County. Hruby said the campaign asked him to make a statement, which they released on the day of Obama’s visit to Cleveland. Hruby said he is a Republican, but he wanted Obama to succeed when he was elected, because the country was hurting. He said the president does deserve credit for helping the auto industry, but he does not believe there has been enough positive change in the economy otherwise. Hruby said the country needs …

Mayor Hruby Speaks in Support of Josh Mandel

The mayor appeared at a dinner for Mandel on Monday.

Mayor Jerry N. Hruby said the crowd at Monday’s fundraising dinner for state Treasurer Josh Mandel was an excited one—and one with plenty of Brecksville residents and Cuyahoga Valley Republican members in attendance. Mandel is running for a U.S. Senate seat. Monday’s dinner in Mayfield Village was closed to the press. A representative from Mandel’s campaign said in an email that about 350 people were in attendance. Hruby said he was honored to be part of the dinner, which also featured New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie. Christie was there to speak on behalf of Mandel, and the two share a number of similar beliefs, Hruby said. Hruby said he has supported Mandel in all of his campaigns and called him a “young man with tremendous values,” one …

Economic Development the Center of State of the City

“We are a town of small businesses,” Mayor Jerry N. Hruby said in his annual speech.

Brecksville has a few tough—but productive—years ahead, Mayor Jerry N. Hruby said in his State of the City speech Wednesday night at the Human Services Center. The city has stuck to its master plan throughout the years, forgoing big-box businesses for small retail, and Hruby said the plan will stay the same as the city looks to fill vacancies that will be left by the VA Medical Center and Giant Eagle. “We are a town of small businesses,” he said, encouraging business owners to approach the city government if they need help. Much of Hruby’s speech focused on economic and city development. Here are a few of the priorities he highlighted: Hruby also discussed a number of businesses with planned renovations, like the Shell gas station and St. …

Mayor Raised More Than $17,000 in Fall Campaign

Some of the money was donated to local causes and other campaigns.

Jerry N. Hruby may have been unopposed in this fall’s mayoral race, but that doesn’t mean he was lacking in support. In fact, the Hruby for Mayor Committee collected more than $17,000 during the campaign. Candidates filed campaign finance reports with the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections, showing their contributions and expenditures during the campaign for the Nov. 8, 2011 election. The post-general election reports were due on Dec. 16. Once the reports are audited, they will be available online. These figures were pulled from the unaudited reports provided by the board of elections. The mayor raised $17,610, not including the nearly $5,000 that was brought from a previous report. Much of that money went toward printing costs, …
