Read some responses from the community and add your thoughts in the comments.
We asked readers what Memorial Day means to them. Here are the responses we received: “Memorial Day is a time for reflection. To remember those that have made the ultimate sacrifice in giving their lives not only for our country but for the freedoms we enjoy today. Its about the sacrifice that all of our military personnel make in being away from their families and loved ones. Its about the families who received that call or letter notifying them that their loved one made the ultimate sacrifice. Memorial Day to me is also about service and giving back to our Veterans that have returned. Many Vets return with physical and invisible scars. Some Vets don't return and are still considered missing. Taking the time to say thank you to these men…

The students learned about Memorial Day on Friday.
Saturday, May 26, 2012
The students learned about Memorial Day from guest speakers, including the school’s former principal.
Friday morning, students at Central School gathered on the front lawn to hear to learn the importance of Memorial Day and to remember those who have served. Some students shared poems and songs they had written about the day, and members of the community spoke to the crowd. Both Broadview Heights Mayor Sam Alai and Brecksville Mayor Jerry N. Hruby addressed the students. Hruby reminded the group that Sgt. Dennis E. Kancler, who died last summer, was once a Brecksville student like them. The main speaker, Nick Carpas, was the former principal at Central School who started the yearly Memorial Day observance. Carpas was inspired to start the event in memory of one of his best friends, Robert, who died in the Vietnam War. He told the students …

We’re collecting responses to share on Memorial Day.
What does Memorial Day mean to you? Does it remind you of a particular person in your life, of their patriotism and dedication? Or maybe you don’t know someone personally who has served the country, but you have memories of attending parades and special ceremonies with your family. Whatever Memorial Day means to you, we want to hear it. Brecksville Patch will be collecting your responses through the end of the week and publishing them on Memorial Day. If we get enough responses, we’ll spread them out over the weekend, too. To participate, just send your name, hometown and a few sentences to Local Editor Rachel Abbey McCafferty by May 25. If you have some family photos you’d like to share, be sure to include them.
