Wintry Weather Makes For Dip in Blood Supply

The Red Cross has issued a national appeal for blood after severe winter weather forced cancellation of more than 14,000 blood drives nationwide. Red Cross officials say they haven't seen a similar blood supply shortage in 10 years. "Because of winter weather Ohio has had to cancel 25 blood drives in January," Christy Chapman, communications manager of The Northern Ohio American Red Cross said. Weather is not the sole cause of blood shortage; others have stayed away because of colds and the flu, she said.   "When we have to cancel blood drives we don't have the opportunity to collect and this has caused an overall shortage," Chapman said.  Shortages are more severe for blood types O negative and A negative., Chapman said.
