Teachers Union, School Board Accuse Each Other of Not Negotiating Fairly

The Brecksville-Broadview Heights school board has also filed charges against individual teachers.

Both parties have filed Unfair Labor Practice charges with the State Employment Relations Board, related to this year’s contentious contract negotiations. Brecksville-Broadview Heights Education Association spokesman Joe Zenir reacts to the board’s Unfair Labor Practice charges.

Zenir said the move seemed like a form of intimidation, adding that the union just wants to be back at the negotiating table. Brecksville-Broadview Heights’ school board sees it differently. Board of Education President David Tryon said that they believe the union and those teachers have been providing false information to the public and making disparaging statements. The board wouldn’t have a problem with teachers talking about the issues if the information was accurate, he said. The …

School Board President Says The Board Has Negotiated “Lawfully”

Brecksville-Broadview Heights’ school board President David Tryon reacts to the teacher union’s Unfair Labor Practice charge.

David Tryon, president of the Brecksville-Broadview Heights Board of Education, doesn’t think the teacher union’s Unfair Labor Practice charge will stand up in a hearing. “We believe that we acted lawfully,” Tryon said. The union—the Brecksville-Broadview Heights Education Association—filed an Unfair Labor Practice charge against the board with the State Employment Relations Board on April 11. The charge alleges that the board’s negotiation news website, which has published the contract proposals from both sides, is “an attempt to create ill will” toward the association. The charge further says that the board is not negotiating in good faith and is attempting to directly deal. Association spokesman Joe Zenir said the board’s website doesn’…
