Brecksville Bike Shop Extending Black Friday Sales

With most shoppers clamoring around big box stores today, Brecksville Velo Sport has decided to push its storewide discounts into tomorrow to attract more customers.

To vie for a share of Black Friday profits, owner Randall Ward featured a 20 percent off storewide sale, marked 30 percent off short sleeve bicycling jerseys and set up a half off clearance table.  Unfortunately, the price cuts just weren't enough to distract customers from the slew of mega-deals that had been advertised by nearby malls and big box stores. But instead of throwing in the towel, Ward has decided to extend his sale through tomorrow to attract regular and new customers who were swept up in today's holiday bonanza.  "Look out the window," said Ward, "the season's not over. Come down and enjoy the storewide sale and keep riding." Brecksville Velo Sport will be open until 6 p.m. tonight, and its hours will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p…

For Many, Black Friday Couldn't Come Soon Enough

Over 1,000 shoppers flocked to Target, braved the elements and eagerly counted the minutes down to midnight.

As Target's doors swung open at 12 a.m., the cold, drowsy and impatient crowd let out a gleeful cheer.  The exuberant outburst could only mean one thing – Black Friday had begun.  Little by little, the 1,000 or more shoppers, who had assembled outside of the bullseye retailer, hurried into the store to find those once-in-a-year deals. Minutes after midnight, folks emerged with flat panel TV's, cameras, video games, cookwear and more.  "I couldn't feel my fingers, my cheeks were frozen and I'd do it all over again to get the Westinghouse," said Claire Johnson from Brunswick. Johnson was referring to the hottest item of the night, a 46" HDTV that was selling for a mere $298. Other shoppers had acquired layouts of the store and were busy …

Tips, Reminders for Thanksgiving Day

A few stores will be open today for any last-minute purchases.

Happy Thanksgiving! Here are just a few things to keep in mind today:

Don't Eat All 13.3 Pounds Today

That's your annual turkey consumption, according to U.S. Census

In the fall of 1621, the Pilgrims, early settlers of Plymouth Colony, held a three-day feast to celebrate a bountiful harvest, an event many regard as the nation’s first Thanksgiving.  Today, we're still feasting. Here are some facts about the holiday from the U.S. Census Bureau. 13.3 pounds The quantity of turkey consumed by the typical American in 2009, with no doubt a hearty helping devoured at Thanksgiving time. Per capita sweet potato consumption was 5.3 pounds. 248 million The number of turkeys expected to be raised in the United States in 2011. That’s up 2 percent from the number raised during 2010. The turkeys produced in 2010 together weighed 7.11 billion pounds and were valued at $ 4.37 billion. 1.1 billion pounds Total …

Police Are On The Lookout for Drunk Drivers Thanksgiving Eve (Video)

It's one of the biggest drinking days of the year — but authorities are urging people to celebrate responsibly.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol, anticipating heavier than usual traffic over the Thanksgiving weekend, released a video that could dampen some enthusiasm for holiday spirits.  The eight-minute video shows compelling footage from actual traffic stops.  Last Thanksgiving weekend, 10 people were killed on Ohio's roadways, with 30 percent of those crashes due to impairment.  Each year, between Thanksgiving and New Year's, nearly 39 people die in crashes, the Patrol says.   “Where we feel it’s needed, we’ll put on a couple of our part-time officers,” Brecksville Police Chief Rich Mannarino said. “But we will be pretty much running with our standard shifts. We don’t typically encounter any increased amount of (drinking and driving related …

Brecksville Bakers Serve Up the Pumpkin

Bakers at Creekside Restaurant give a peek at their Thanksgiving work.

Thanksgiving usually brings a lot of food and, of course, a lot of pie. Following up a filling turkey dinner with pumpkin pie is a popular tradition in America, said Matt Harper, Creekside Restaurant owner.   For some, that pie makes a busy holiday a crazy-busy holiday. The bakers at Creekside sometimes have work start at midnight the days before Thanksgiving. Cranking out more than 100 pies in a matter of days can be taxing work. “People are constantly placing orders, you just never know what to expect,” said Creekside baker of 8 and a half years, Heidi Pittman, who describes holidays as hectic and exciting. Pittman teams up with co-worker, Sally Kwait, to get the baking done. Kwait is a Creekside newbie—only eight months into her time at…
