Courtyard Project Underway at Hilton Elementary

Volunteers have been giving the courtyards a makeover this summer.

Class may be out, but Hilton Elementary has been filled with activity this summer as volunteers overhaul the school’s courtyards, turning the outdoor spaces into learning centers.  Hilton Elementary School has three courtyards enclosed in the building; the courtyards are small, outdoor spaces surrounded by classrooms. One of the courtyards was overhauled last year, and volunteers took on the other two this summer.  The designs were done by students at the Cuyahoga Community College. Mike Whitman, an instructor at the college, said he and a few students met with parents, administrators and elementary students to learn what they wanted to see. The college students learned about elementary curriculum and scaling ideas to the appropriate size…

Studies have shown that volunteering can make you happier and healthier.

My mom was my best friend. She was the first one who I would call to share any news, and she always listened patiently to my ideas, observations and thoughts. But she didn’t have much patience for complaining, and whenever I did so, she would say something that drove me crazy: “If you feel sorry for yourself, do something to help someone else.” “But how could doing something for someone else help me? She just doesn’t get it,” I remember thinking. But according to a 2007 publication from the Corporation for National and Community Service called “The Health Benefits of Volunteering,” volunteering can provide social and health benefits for those who volunteer.
