Wrestling Team Ready to Start a Busy, Challenging Season

The varsity wrestling team’s season begins Saturday night.

Head Coach Todd Haverdill couldn’t say enough about the Brecksville-Broadview Heights wrestling team this week.  “Wrestling’s a really tough sport,” Haverdill said. “It’s hard. … But this team has a real positive attitude about things.” And with their record, they have plenty of things to be positive about. The team hasn’t lost a dual match since January 2005, Haverdill said, and they’ve won seven conference tournaments in a row. Last year, the team placed 9th in the state. Three of this year’s wrestlers placed at states last year, with another two who qualified.  This year’s season will begin Saturday night at Claymont. Bees Gymnasts, Wrestlers Headed to States This Weekend

The Brecksville-Broadview Heights gymnastics team is fighting for its 9th state championship in a row this Friday and Saturday. But they’re not the only Bees facing some tough competition this weekend. Here’s a quick look at what Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School athletes will be doing this weekend. Brecksville Invitational Holiday Tournament: Bees Wrestlers In Third Place

Host Brecksville fades in own tournament after early lead.

Busy as Bees, the entire Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School complex was buzzing all day Wednesday. Wrestling fans crowded through the doors during the 10-hour first session of the 50th Brecksville Invitational Holiday Tournament. For awhile, the home fans enjoyed a first-place standing by coach Todd Haverdill's team. Brecksville led after the first half of the day's action in the 45-team event that features 439 wrestlers. At the end of the night, the Bees were in third place with 94 points. Wadsworth, seeking a third tournament title, stormed into the lead with 113 points, followed by Bedford Chanel with 95 points. Brecksville Invitational Holiday Tournament: Good As Gold

Brecksville Tournament celebrates 50th anniversary with record 45 wrestling teams.

The holiday celebrations are just beginning in Brecksville. The oldest holiday wrestling tournament in America will roll out the mats for its golden anniversary on Wednesday and Thursday at Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School. A record 45 teams, including three from Georgia, will compete at the 50th annual Brecksville Invitational Holiday Tournament. Tournament Director Nick Dimitris wrestled in the first event in 1961. "I was good, but not an exceptional wrestler at Rhodes High School and did not place at that inaugural tournament in 1961," Dimitris said.
