Students at Chippewa Elementary School have been learning about staying active and giving back through the “Double Dutch for the Yuletide Hunger Drive." Learn more by watching the video above. If you’d like to contribute to the Yuletide Hunger Program, you can take nonperishable food items or toiletries to the Human Services Center by Nov. 30. The program supports local families in need during the holidays.

More families needed extra help around the holidays from the Yuletide Hunger Program last year, and the city expects that trend to continue. City Council approved $17,500 in spending for the 2012 program at their meeting on June 5, an increase of $2,500. The program is run on donations, but the city has to approve the expenses in advance. The program helps provide food for families in need in Brecksville, Broadview Heights, Seven Hills and Independence during the winter holidays. More than 140 families signed up for the program last year—there were about a dozen more families in 2011 than in 2010, Director of Human Services Ted Lux said in an email. While the Yuletide Hunger Program was a bit short on donations near the beginning of the week, by the time Saturday came around, there was plenty of food for each family to take home. “The community has stepped up wonderfully,” said volunteer Judy Lewis of Broadview Heights. The sorting began on Tuesday, and on Wednesday, officials were putting out the word that they still needed more food to give to the 146 families who signed up this year. The Yuletide Hunger Program supports families in need in Brecksville, Broadview Heights, Seven Hills and Independence during the holidays. Update, Dec. 7, 2011, 2:34 p.m. Human Services Director Ted Lux said in an email that the Yuletide Hunger Program is short on food this year, but that they will be able to buy what they need using the cash donations. Lux noted that the monetary donations were very generous, especially from the students in the school district. But food donations are still being accepted. If anyone would like to donate to the Yuletide Hunger Program, they can drop food off at Blossom Hill, 4400 Oakes Road. The original post is below. Auditions for Brecksville Theater on the Square’s production of August: Osage County continue tonight. According to the theater’s website, the auditions start at 7 p.m. According to the city’s calendar, this is the last week for leaf pick-ups. Collections for the Yuletide Hunger Program continue this week. And this is the last week for the Brecksville branch of the Cuyahoga County Public Library’s “fall storytimes.” According to the library’s website, the “storytimes” will begin again in January.
