Young Artists Help Commemorate the Bicentennial

The mayor met with the Luthers on Tuesday.

Mayor Jerry N. Hruby took some time Tuesday afternoon to meet with the Luthers, a creative pair of brothers who submitted work for the city’s time capsules. Both tried their hand at realistic drawings of city buildings, and the mayor was especially impressed with Isaac Luther’s caricature of one Brecksville icon—the mayor himself. Luther said he’s always preferred drawing people and the mayor just came to mind when he was thinking of people who represent the city. Elizabeth Luther, the boys’ mother, said both have aspirations of working in the arts when they grow up. Editor’s note: One of the photo captions has been corrected to note that the Luthers live in Broadview Heights.

Reader's Digest Looking for 'Most Interesting Town in America'

Nominate Brecksville by submitting a story explaining why it's the nation's most interesting community.

One of the nation's most widely read magazines is asking readers to submit their towns for a contest naming the most interesting locale in America. Reader's Digest is asking residents in communities across the country to nominate their town for the magazine's "America's Most Interesting Town" contest. It works like this: to nominate Brecksville, a resident would write a story—or a letter to-the-editor style piece—explaining why they think Brecksville is the most interesting town in America. Then, you submit your letter to Reader's Digest's phase two of it's "We Hear You America" campaign. The winner will get their town on the cover of an upcoming Reader's Digest issue and $1,000. Winners are based on votes on the magazine's contest website…

Business, Citizens of the Year Were Important to the Bicentennial Celebration

The winners were honored before Wednesday’s State of the City address.

This year’s Business and Citizens of the Year had one major thing in common: they were important supporters of the city’s bicentennial celebration. The Brecksville Chamber of Commerce honored The House of LaRose as its Business of the Year. The House of LaRose brought the Budweiser Clydesdales to the city for its bicentennial parade during Home Days. And the chamber named Frank DeWolf and Don Faulhaber, the co-chairs of the Bicentennial Committee, as its Citizens of the Year.

Dom Sciria’s 2011 Was Filled With Family Milestones, City Activities

Dom Sciria was one of your choices for Brecksville Patch’s People of the Year.

At the end of 2011, I asked you to nominate Brecksville Patch’s People of the Year. Now, I’m sharing what made 2011 memorable for your nominees. See all the nominees here. When Dom Sciria thinks about what made 2011 memorable for him, it’s the people he spent it with that stand out, from his children and wife Kathy to his fellow volunteers in the city. As the chair of the city’s Planning Commission, the president of the Cuyahoga Valley Republicans and a member of the Bicentennial Committee, Sciria said he came into contact with a lot of “hardworking” and “dedicated” people. “It just made the year fly by,” Sciria said. There were a lot of milestones in his personal life, too, with his middle child graduating from college and his son …

Frank DeWolf’s 2011 Was Focused on the Bicentennial

Frank DeWolf was one of your choices for Brecksville Patch’s People of the Year.

At the end of 2011, I asked you to nominate Brecksville Patch’s People of the Year. Now, I’m sharing what made 2011 memorable for your nominees. See all the nominees here. The last profile will run later this week. Frank DeWolf’s 2011 was focused on the past. DeWolf was one of the two co-chairmen of Brecksville’s Bicentennial Committee. The group worked hard to create a yearlong celebration in honor of the city’s 200th anniversary, planning events and coordinating projects. “I just can’t believe how fast the whole year went,” DeWolf said. DeWolf, who was nominated by co-chair Don Faulhaber, said the bicentennial wouldn’t have been successful without the support of the community. People gave time, money and energy to the cause, DeWolf said…

Brecksville’s Bicentennial Celebration Not Done Yet

2011 was the official bicentennial year, but the festivities will continue into 2012.

Brecksville’s bicentennial year may be done, but the celebration isn’t finished just yet. Bicentennial Committee Co-chairmen Frank DeWolf and Don Faulhaber took a break from their busy year to give Brecksville Patch a quick glimpse at what’s yet to come: For a look at all the bicentennial coverage so far, check our Brecksville Bicentennial page. During the past year, the committee aimed to host at least one meaningful event each month, DeWolf said. A look at their calendar shows that more than three dozen bicentennial-themed events and projects were held this year, either by the committee or other local groups. There were events for adults, kids and everyone in between, and events for large crowds and small groups. “I think the year went …

Civil War Reenactor Wins Brecksville Bicentennial Raffle

Gerald Payn portrayed President Abraham Lincoln at this summer’s reenactment.

It’s appropriate that the winner of this year’s Civil War-themed raffle was none other than the man who portrayed President Abraham Lincoln at this summer’s reenactment. Frank DeWolf, co-chair of the Brecksville Bicentennial Committee, recently sent in this photo of Wooster resident Gerald Payn receiving the "Brothers Divided" woodcarving. Payn said he never thought he’d win the carving when he bought a ticket—he was just trying to help the group. Payn plans to share the carving at his local library and historical society, and he wants to take it along when he does his many speaking engagements. This year, Payn said he took part in about 100 events and about a dozen reenactments. Payn said there are a few reasons why he chooses to portray …

Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra Plays for the Community This Thursday

Thursday's concert starts the 2012 season early and honors the bicentennial.

The members of the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra will bring their musical skills to the community this week with a special concert in the Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School auditorium. The concert serves as a warm up to the orchestra’s 2012 season at Severance Hall in Cleveland. James Feddeck will conduct the orchestra in numerous pieces, including one by Johann Sebastian Bach. “We have had the good fortune to being them out biannually since 2001 for this warm-up concert,” said Doug Huth, who is on the board of directors for the Kiwanis Club of Brecksville and chairperson of COYO relations. The club hosts the event, along with the Broadview Heights Kiwanis and the school's music department. The composition line-up starts with…
