5 Things You Need to Know This Week, Sept. 26 – Oct. 2

From school district meetings to a theater performance, there’s plenty happening in Brecksville this week.

The Brecksville-Broadview Heights Board of Education will meet at 7 p.m. on Monday. According to the agenda, the board will hear a transportation report from the superintendent and presentations from some of the schools' principals.  The district’s permanent improvement committee will also meet Monday. According to the district’s website, the committee is holding a special meeting at 4:30 p.m. Brecksville Little Theatre’s latest show, Mister Roberts, begins this weekend.  The Cuyahoga Valley Career Center is celebrating its 40th anniversary this Saturday with a variety of events and programs. Preview: Memorial Day Activities in Brecksville

A parade and ceremony will mark the holiday.

The year 2011 marks the 150th anniversary of both President Abraham Lincoln’s inauguration and the Civil War’s beginning at Fort Sumter. Brecksville’s 200-year celebration also makes this year's Memorial Day events special occasions. “There will be a lot of bicentennial committee members with floats at the parade,” said Brecksville Special Events Coordinator Ashley Rizzo. The Memorial Day Parade begins at 10:45 a.m. Monday, May 30 at City Hall. The parade, which will include the Brecksville-Broadview Heights Marching Band and Bicentennial Committee member floats, will include more than 50 parade entries, Rizzo said. Brecksville City Council Appoints Part-time Firefighters, Acting Law Director

The council also approved a number of temporary work easements for the Riverview Road Sanitary Sewer Project.

Brecksville City Council last night approved the appointment of two, new part-time firefighters to the Fire Department.   Noah B. Coyner was appointed as a part-time firefighter/EMT. Mayor Jerry N. Hruby noted that Coyner is the son of a part-time Brecksville firefighter who lives in town with his family. Joseph J. Lecznar, a Seven Hills resident, was appointed as a part-time firefighter/paramedic.  Hruby said he hoped both men would make a career out of the Brecksville Fire Department.  “Gentleman, be safe. Be careful,” Hruby said to both after they took the oath of office in front of a full room. “Thank you very much for your service.” Earlier in the evening, council approved the appointment of Stephen Klonowski as acting law director …

Learn About Brecksville’s History at the Library

The Brecksville branch of the Cuyahoga County Public Library has a number of events scheduled in honor of the city’s bicentennial.

In honor of Brecksville’s bicentennial, the Brecksville branch of the Cuyahoga County Public Library is hosting a series of historically themed presentations and programs throughout the year. The first event, “Center of It All,” took place last Saturday. The library’s meeting room was filled, with people even standing along the back and side walls to learn more about the city’s history. Cathie Clager narrated a slide show of examples and old photographs, giving an overview of the people who have lived in what is now Brecksville, from different Native American communities to the first settlers from New England to the farmers of the 1820s.  Clager will be putting on five presentations throughout the year at the library, each looking at a …
