Survey: 24 Percent of Area Parents Allow Underage Drinking for Prom

Prom is slated for this Saturday, but officials are asking students — and their parents — to make healthy choices.

With the Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School prom set for Saturday, the Community Awareness and Prevention Association is promoting its “Prom Promise” initiative, encouraging students to make healthy choices. "Be the Majority...Choose Not to Use" is a CAPA campaign designed to keep students from drinking and/or using drugs. The organization also highlighting its “Parent Who Host Lose the Most” campaign.  A recent CAPA news release featured a 2011 survey, noting that 24 percent of BBHHS students reported, “they attended gatherings or parties in which parents permitted or purchased alcohol for student use.” Throughout the week students will have the opportunity to participate in a number of fun activities promoting the "Majority" …

"Old" Carl, really? No out of touch, bud. Drinking probably wasn't illegal back in your day. The laws have changed and the drinking age is now 21. Most HS kids never reach 21 while attending HS. Although you are correct, the mind set of 24% of the parents seem to be, "Well we did it, so why can't our kids? LOL." Brecksville-Broadview Heights Students Finalists in Essay Contest

Several local students earned scholarship money in the Maltz Museum Stop the Hate Essay Contest.

Two students from Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School are among the 10 finalists in the “Stop the Hate” contest.  Brecksville students Biar Akar, a senior, and junior Courtney Schmidt landed among the 10 finalists for their essays to stop hatred, as part of the 5th annual Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage Stop the Hate: Youth Speak Out! contest. GRAND SCHOLARSHIP WINNER ($50,000 Scholarship) Annie Robinson, Aurora High School – 11th grade SECOND PLACE ($25,000 Scholarship) Kelly Knaser, Wickliffe High School – 12th grade THIRD PLACE ($15,000 Scholarship) Robert Edwards, Max Hayes High School, Cleveland – 12th grade  SCHOLARSHIP FINALISTS  6th – 10th GRADE FINALISTS 6th GRADE  7th GRADE  8th GRADE  9th GRADE 10th GRADE

Two Brecksville-Broadview Heights Students Named Finalists in ‘Stop the Hate’ Contest

Biar Akar, a senior, and junior Courtney Schmidt landed among the finalists for their essays to stop hatred.

Two students from Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School are among the 10 finalists in the “Stop the Hate” contest.  Brecksville students Biar Akar, a senior, and junior Courtney Schmidt landed among the 10 finalists for their essays to stop hatred, as part of the 5th annual Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage Stop the Hate: Youth Speak Out! contest. Akar and Schmidt were among 1,600 participating students from seven counties, according to the Brecksville-Broadview Heights City School District website. They will compete for three four-year college scholarships valued at $50,000, $25,000 and $15,000, as they give a presentation at an awards ceremony at Severance Hall on May 2.

Brecksville High School Student Looks to Conduct Houston Symphony

Michael Bednarsky is looking for the public’s support for the Houston Public Radio Classical 91.7 Air Conducting Contest.

A junior at Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School is participating in a contest to win $300 and an opportunity to conduct the Houston Symphony. Michael Bednarsky, a dedicated music student planning to pursue his passion for music after high school, is looking for the public’s support for the Houston Public Radio Classical 91.7 Air Conducting Contest. In a YouTube video, submitted for the contest, Bednarsky “conducts” Strauss’s "Also Sprach Zarathustra, op. 30.” To cast your vote for him, follow this link and cast your vote. But time is running out. The contest ends at 2 p.m. May 2.

Glenn Miller Orchestra Coming to Town

Tickets are $20 pre-order and $25 at the door.

The world-famous Glenn Miller Orchestra is making a stop at Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School.  Hosted by the high school’s band boosters, the event will take place in auditorium at 6:30 p.m. May 9. The high school’s jazz ensemble is the opening act.  The Glenn Miller Orchestra has its roots dating back to the 1930s.  Tickets are $20 pre-order — and can be purchased online — and $25 at the door.  Call 440-838-4885 for more information.
