From the election to Veteran’s Day, there's a lot going on around town.

Election Day is Tuesday. Check out our Election Central page for a look at the local candidates and issues on the ballot, or try our voter guide to compare them side-by-side. The next “Coffee With the Superintendent” is from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday at the McDonald’s in Brecksville, according to the district’s website.  Brecksville Theater on the Square’s production of Annie continues this week, with shows on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Veteran’s Day is Friday, and according to a press release from the city, city offices, including City Hall and the Service Department, will be closed. Also in honor of Veteran’s Day, the Chippewa Garden Club will be dedicating a memorial marker to men and women who have served the country …

Getting Ready for Winter with the Chippewa Garden Club: Cutting Back Perennials

The local garden club has tips for homeowners who are preparing for the late fall and winter.

Fall is a good time to cut down perennials and other plants, said Chippewa Garden Club member Lynne Evans. Perennials are plants that live for at least three years. Evans invited Brecksville Patch to her home to share some tips on getting your yard ready for winter.

Fall might traditionally be harvest season, but that’s not the case for everything. One plant in particular that can be planted in the fall is garlic. Paula Kramer, a member of the Chippewa Garden Club, has some tips for local gardeners who want to have garlic to harvest next August.

Getting Ready for Winter with the Chippewa Garden Club: Feeding the Birds

The local garden club has tips for homeowners who are preparing for the late fall and winter.

While spring and summer might be the most popular seasons for gardeners, there are still plenty of things homeowners can do now to prepare their yards for fall and winter. Some members of the Chippewa Garden Club volunteered to share some of their autumn tips with Brecksville Patch. Today’s topic is feeding the birds through the cold months. Homeowners can feed birds using store-bought sunflower seeds or plain suet, said garden club member Lynne Evans, or they can try this simple recipe using seeds and peanut butter. Flower show celebrates Brecksville's bicentennial.

The "Red, White and Blooming" flower show, which is sponsored by the Emerald Necklace and the Chippewa garden clubs, is in honor of Brecksville's bicentennial. The event began yesterday, and runs again from noon through 3 p.m. today. Check back on Monday for more photos from the flower show.

Photo of the Day: Getting Ready for the Flower Show

The Chippewa Garden Club and Emerald Necklace Garden Club show will open to the public tomorrow afternoon.

The Community Center is just about ready for the “Red, White and Blooming” flower show to begin.  Kathleen Habib, the treasurer of the Chippewa Garden Club and one of the people in charge of horticulture for the show, said that people with entries would be setting them up this afternoon and evening. She was setting up her own entries earlier this afternoon so that she could help others when they arrived.  The show, which is co-hosted by the Chippewa Garden Club and the Emerald Necklace Garden Club, opens to the public at 1 p.m. Saturday.
