Don't Diet: Because food temptations abound during the holidays, it is not the time to deprive yourself. It's difficult to say I'm not going to have that or I'm not going to have this, especially when you're at a party, explained RN Rose Hosler. She suggests changing your mind set from “deprivation” to “moderation.” “Just watch your portions and let go of it,” she said. Be Mindful: Take note of what you're eating. This is the time of year when people put out trays of food at parties and work. People pass by these foods and take one. Then they pass by again and take another. She suggests five, low- to no-cost ways that improve overall well-being and keep stress levels in check. 1. Take Time to Breathe: Sit quietly for one minute, breathing in through the nose and out through the mouth. You could do this while driving to and from work, before sitting down to eat, or at bedtime. The Benefit: Research shows taking deep breaths four times a day improves cognitive function by 20 percent. “Just step back. We’re launching our annual Deck the House Contest to find the most over-the-top holiday decorations in America—the best “decked” house in the country—the one home so spectacularly decorated that everyone in town jokes your holiday decorations could rival Rockefeller Center’s. If this sounds like your house, upload a photo or video of your home to our contest page from Nov. 26 to Dec. 16. You can enter the contest and check out entries from Brecksville and across the country here. Only residents of Patch towns are eligible to enter.
