The Ohio Department of Transportation brought a distracted driving simulator to the high school on Friday.
At Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School on Friday, students were encouraged to drive impaired and to tap out texts while at the wheel—virtually, of course. The Ohio Department of Transportation’s distracted driver simulator shows students just how difficult it is to react if a driver isn’t giving the road his or her full attention. Students tried out the simulator, which was set up like a video game with a steering wheel and gas and brake pedals. If a student was “distracted,” a cell phone popped up in the corner and they had to type to respond to questions, while continuing to drive and keep an eye out for dogs, deer and people running into the road. The “impaired” drivers had a delay on their response time, and the depth perception …

The grant could cover all of the project’s costs.
A planned repair to state Route 82 will now cost the city a lot less than expected. In fact, it might not cost the city anything at all. The city needs to repair a failed culvert running under Royalton Road, a plan that began moving forward this fall. During Tuesday’s City Council meeting at City Hall, members learned that the city is receiving a grant for $230,000 for construction costs from the Ohio Department of Transportation. The department is providing another $23,000 to the city for construction management costs. The money is coming from the department’s Geologic Site Management Program. City Engineer Gerald Wise said the grant could cover all of the project’s costs. If construction costs go above the grant amount, the city will be …

Snow is expected for the Brecksville area Tuesday night and Wednesday.
Today’s rain is expected to turn to snow this evening as temperatures drop. The National Weather Service still has a flood watch in effect for Cuyahoga County until late Tuesday, but a rain/snow mix is expected to arrive Tuesday evening and last throughout Wednesday. Temperatures are expected to stay in the low 30s and 40s. The Ohio Department of Transportation District 12 will have snowplows and salt out in Cuyahoga County if necessary, according to a press release. And the department reminds drivers to slow down and leave plenty of space between vehicles when the roads are slippery. More winter driving tips are available on the department’s website. As always, check Brecksville Patch here—and on Facebook and Twitter—for the latest …

The road is expected to be reopened Saturday afternoon.
Interstate 77 southbound will be closed between state Route 82 and the Ohio Turnpike as of 7 p.m. tonight, according to a press release from the Ohio Department of Transportation. The lanes on Interstate 77 southbound have been partially closed for the past few days, slowing down traffic as drivers were directed into one lane. A contractor and an ODOT engineer noticed a crack in a beam on the Valley Parkway overpass on March 22 and closed the road from about 11 p.m. that night until 7:30 a.m. the next morning, Amanda Lee, spokesperson for the Ohio Department of Transportation District 12, which serves Cuyahoga, Lake and Geauga counties, said on Wednesday. The left lane was opened after placing a temporary support under the overpass. …

A portion of the southbound lanes is closed.
Anyone driving through Brecksville on Interstate 77 South might see a slow commute today. Two of the three southbound lanes from state Route 82 and the turnpike are closed until further notice, said Amanda Lee, spokesperson for the Ohio Department of Transportation District 12, which serves Cuyahoga, Lake and Geauga counties. A contractor and an ODOT engineer noticed a crack in a beam on the Valley Parkway overpass last night, and closed that portion of Interstate 77 southbound from about 11 p.m. until 7:30 a.m., Lee said. After 7:30 a.m., the department’s engineers and safety inspectors reopened the left lane after placing a temporary support under the overpass.
