Services will be held Thursday morning.
Thomas Jon Harwood of Brecksville died Friday at the age of 74. Family was the most important part of Harwood’s life, said his son, councilman Michael Harwood. All of Harwood’s children and grandchildren still lived in the community that he had grown up in, and he recently celebrated his 50th wedding anniversary. “Family was his priority over everything else,” Michael Harwood said. Harwood was the husband of Carole (nee Williams), father of Michael (Debbie), Patricia, and Timothy (Erin), grandfather to Justin, Emily, Daniel, Matthew and Alexander, great grandfather to Adyson and brother to James. He was retired and a former member of the Army National Guard of Ohio. There will be a service at 10 a.m. on Thursday at St. Basil the Great …

Services are being held Saturday with visitation hours on Friday.
Neil P. Rackliffe, a Brecksville resident and Korean War veteran, died earlier this week at the age of 77. Rackliffe loved spending time with his children and grandchildren, said his wife, Marie Rackliffe. He made time to read with them, and he used to write stories for his grandchildren in other cities on the computer. He also liked to act silly for the children in his family, she said, even dressing up as the Easter bunny. “He was always a gentle man,” Marie Rackliffe said. He was also fiercely patriotic—he had even picked out some patriotic songs to be played at his funeral services this weekend, she said—and involved in the community. And he loved to fish, she added. He had been fighting cancer for 20 years, but he didn’t let it slow …

The week will start off with a holiday, and there’s plenty going on later this week.
It’s the Fourth of July! Check out our list of closed businesses and offices, like City Hall and the Brecksville branch of the Cuyahoga County Public Library, before you head out to run any errands today. If your recycling and trash pick-up day is typically on Monday, it will be on Tuesday this week, according to the Service Department’s website. City Council meets at 8 p.m. on Tuesday. The Brecksville branch of the Cuyahoga County Public Library has a number of activities for children this week, from their regular storytimes to a special event on Thursday. Check the library's calendar for more details. And there are two blood drives in Brecksville this week. According to the American Red Cross website, there will be a blood drive from 1 …

The Brecksville church was part of nine pilot parishes in raising funds for this diocese-wide campaign.
The Rev. Walter Jenne can’t explain how St. Basil the Great Catholic Church became one of nine parishes in the pilot phase of a diocese-wide fundraising campaign. “I’m not sure how we ended up one of the pilot parishes,” Jenne said. “I kept asking that question. They just kept saying, ‘Well, you are.’” The 3-year "Rooted in Faith, Forward in Hope" campaign is “a once-in-a-lifetime initiative,” Jenne said. “It’s a joint venture between the Catholic Diocese and the parishes.” Jenne served as part of the early planning of this program, which is aimed at raising $125 million to support spiritual, educational and social service needs of Catholics in Northeast Ohio, according to information from the diocese. He was a member of a “case statement…
