ReplyLooks like the kids would have more fun on Saturday or Sunday. Better than the snow from trick or treats past but why not make it better for the kids (and safer, better visibility etc.)

ReplyWhat an unprecedented concept by teachers and school boards just a few minutes from Brecksville. Certianly seems like a more adult like approach than we are seeing here. You can read the full story at http://www.ohio.com

Published: August 16, 2012 - 04:40 PM | Updated: August 16, 2012 - 04:50 PMNegotiations between the Akron teachers union and the school board has reached an impasse.
The Akron Education Association and the Akron Board of Education have agreed to submit all unresolved items to a fact-finder.
Superintendent David James said negotiations began four months ago. The contract expired June 30.
“If you’re stuck on the same thing now [as in the beginning] then it’s time for a third party to get involved,” James said.
The fact-finder will conduct a hearing on all unresolved issues and submit a set of recommendations to both sides.
If either side rejects the recommendations, the parties are required to attempt mediation of any unresolved issues.
The union represents 1,700 full-time and 500 to 600 part-time employees.
James said both parties agreed not to publicly discuss which issues are the sticking points.

On the article Teachers, Staff Unions Vow to Give Up Right to Strike if School Board Gives Up Right to Implement Contract

ReplyUnprecedented? It does not seem unprecedented to pre-load a “Pledge” with rhetoric that sounds as though it could have been written by James Carville’s apprentice. It sounds kind of desperate actually.
Several teachers union locals have issued pledges not to strike, some even pledge not to strike and not to talk in public about the situation until a cooling off period occurs and negotiations can be restarted. (Elmira, Oregon 1982)
I would have hoped that the work between the two parties and the federal mediator would be quietly and professionally been completed this week. That pledge from both parties would be a welcome one. -

ReplyBased upon your commentary is it safe to assume that you believe that the same lack of caring applies by default to the wide spread bi-partisan commitment to The Cleveland Public Schools Transformation plan? It appears at least on the surface that the teaching and administrative staffs affected by that plan are being asked considerably more of than that of BBHSD.

Thanks Rachel, was not implying they were closed, just that the automated phone message that was sent out this afternoon stated it would be considered as needed. Seems the hype of the storm in the media has people calling the schools asking if they will be closed Tuesday.
