Mild Winter Means Big Savings for the City

The city has used about half the salt it did at this time last year.

There’s been a distinct lack of snowmen and snow days in Brecksville this winter.

But this mild winter has at least one clear advantage, no matter where you stand on the cold: it’s saved the city a lot of money.

So far this winter, the city has purchased 3,600 tons of salt. At this time last year, the city was already up to 7,565 tons.

Even though the price of salt has gone up a bit—about 76 cents per ton—the city has paid far less. According to figures from the , the city has paid almost $173,000 this year, versus about $357,000 at this time last year. The city paid about $460,000 total for salt for the 2010-2011 winter.

But as Public Services Director Ron Weidig said—and as anyone who’s spent some time in Ohio knows—it will still be day by day until spring is officially here.
